English Idioms

Abstract: English idioms, as the quintessence of the English language, are vivid, terse and comprehensive expressions. Idiom is also a scientific and philosophical poetry with deep meaning, harmonic tone, and imaginative analogy, which will make it more difficult to translate idioms. The understanding and translation of idioms is the important part in translating. This paper firstly illustrates the definition of English idioms, and then the main body discusses the translation of English idioms into Chinese. English idioms are the product of English culture that the nation has accumulated through many years. Therefore, translation of English idioms should be related to their cultural information. This paper presents some basic methods of such translation, which makes up a major part of the paper.

��Definition of English idioms

��An idiom is a combination of two or more words which function as a unit of meaning. An idiom usually has an implied meaning. English idioms mean an accepted phrase, construction, or expression contrary to the usual patterns of the language or having a meaning different from the language or having a meaning different from the literal�� (Webster's New World Dictionary of the American Language, 2nd college edition, 1972). It means idioms are words, phrases or expressions which are commonly used in everyday conversation by native speakers of English. They are often metaphorical and make the language more colorful.

In the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary, idiom is explained as "phrase or sentence whose meaning is not obvious through knowledge of the individual meanings of the constituent words but must be learnt as a whole." From this we get the characteristics of idioms: Firstly, the meaning of a semantically restricted idiom is unpredictable. Secondly, idioms are indivisible units whose components can't be varied or varied only within definable limits. No other words can be substituted for those comprising.

In summary, an idiom may be defined as combination of two or more words which are usually structurally fixed and semantically opaque, and function as a single unit of meaning.
